NATHAN MANLEY
Rainbow Trout
Oncorhynchus mykiss
For whose sake must you prism out the light
that flies about your flashing flank just so
and with something of that ostentation
befitting higher animals? For this,
they’ll split you, poor thing, like a zippered purse:
O the gem-red slick and limp swing of you
cordons and strings the dark-dripping rubies
that filtered your blood all quick and glisten
as each gaudy drop mints its crimson coin
atop the water
